"What is God Building Within Us?

This month we have been talking about June being a month to build. Many times when we hear the word “build,” we immediately think about external things — businesses, ministries, platforms, finances, opportunities, relationships, or visions coming to life. While God absolutely calls us to build outwardly, there is another type of building that is just as important: the internal work God is doing within us.
Before God builds something through us, He often builds something in us.
God is not only concerned with what we produce publicly. He is also concerned with the condition of our hearts, minds, character, and spiritual foundation. A building can look impressive on the outside but still collapse if the foundation is weak.
Sometimes while we are praying for doors to open, God is building:
patience,
discernment,
endurance,
humility,
discipline,
wisdom,
emotional healing,
spiritual maturity,
stronger boundaries,
deeper faith,
and complete dependence on Him.
The hidden work matters.
In Scripture, Nehemiah was not only rebuilding walls externally — God was rebuilding a people internally. The walls represented protection, identity, restoration, and order. Before the people could fully move forward, there had to be rebuilding within the community itself.
Likewise, God often uses difficult seasons to strengthen what cannot be seen naturally.
Sometimes the painful season was building:
resilience you did not know you had,
discernment you previously lacked,
courage to obey God fully,
or freedom from unhealthy attachments and old mindsets.
James 1:4 says:
“But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”
Even the waiting seasons are building something.
The truth is, God may be more focused on developing the builder than the building itself. Because if He builds us properly internally, we will have the strength, wisdom, and character to sustain what He places in our hands externally.
This is why we cannot despise hidden seasons. Some of the greatest construction God does happens privately before it ever becomes visible publicly.
Maybe in this season God is building:
a stronger prayer life,
consistency,
confidence,
healing,
stability,
trust,
obedience,
or the ability to carry greater responsibility.
Do not underestimate internal growth simply because it cannot yet be seen by others.
What God builds within you today may become the very thing that sustains your purpose tomorrow.
Reflection:
What internal areas of your life may God be strengthening, rebuilding, or developing in this season?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for not only building things around me, but also building within me. Strengthen my character, deepen my faith, heal the areas that still need restoration, and prepare me for everything You have assigned to my life. Help me trust the hidden work You are doing internally, even before I see the external manifestation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
