Scripture: Nehemiah 4:6; Nehemiah 6:3
“So we rebuilt the wall… for the people had a mind to work.” (Nehemiah 4:6)
“I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down.” (Nehemiah 6:3)
Devotional
One of the greatest threats to what God is building in our lives is not always opposition—it is distraction.
Nehemiah understood this well. While rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, he faced criticism, resistance, intimidation, and repeated invitations to leave the work. His enemies could not stop the assignment, so they attempted to divert his attention from it.
His response was simple but powerful:
“I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down.”
Nehemiah recognized that every invitation did not deserve a response and every distraction did not deserve his attention. He understood that the work God had entrusted to him was too important to abandon.
The same is true for us.
God has given each of us something to build—our faith, our families, our businesses, our ministries, our character, and our calling. Yet often the challenge is not getting started; it is remaining focused long enough to finish.
Many people begin with enthusiasm but lose momentum when progress seems slow. Others become weary because the work requires more time, patience, and perseverance than expected. Some become distracted by comparison, criticism, or opportunities that pull them away from their primary assignment.
But Nehemiah teaches us an important lesson: what God has called us to build deserves our full attention.
Notice that the wall was not completed because the people had perfect conditions. It was completed because they had a mind to work. They remained committed despite opposition. They stayed focused despite distractions. They kept building despite challenges.
As we move through this season of building, God may be asking us the same question: Will you keep your hands on the work?
Not every battle requires your participation. Not every opinion requires your response. Not every opportunity requires your attention.
Sometimes spiritual maturity is knowing what to ignore so you can remain faithful to what God assigned.
Reflection Question
What distractions, discouragements, or competing priorities are trying to pull you away from the work God has called you to do?
Prayer
Father, thank You for the assignments You have placed in our hands. Give us the wisdom to recognize distractions and the discipline to remain focused. Help us not to abandon the work because of opposition, fatigue, or delay. Strengthen us to remain faithful, knowing that what You have begun, You are able to complete. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Weekly Encouragement
Keep your hands on the work. The progress may seem slow, but God is still building. The challenges may be real, but God’s grace is greater.
Stay focused. Stay faithful. Stay on the wall.
What God has called you to build is worth finishing.
