WHEN GOD REROUTES TO PROTECT

Updated: Nov 8

Sometimes God has to reroute our steps not because of what we’ve done, but because of what others have done or are doing to us. That’s why spiritual discernment is so crucial. The Holy Spirit often tries to alert us when something is amiss, prompting God to step in and intervene on our behalf.

As believers, we must trust His leading, even when it’s painful or confusing. With a pure heart, we may still be blind to the fact that someone we trust doesn’t have our best interests at heart.

Sometimes, God has to move us away from certain people, places, and spaces to protect what He has already deposited in us. If that means growing alone for a season until your next assignment, so be it.

Remember this: God knows exactly who and what is the right fit for you. Trust Him to position you perfectly.

If you find yourself at this place, here are some helpful points:

1. Recognize God’s sovereignty over your path

Sometimes God does intend to use a place or leader as part of your growth. But if that leader mishandles you, abuses their position, or steps outside of God’s will. God will protect you by rerouting you.

 • That doesn’t mean your growth stops. It means the classroom changed, but the lesson is still active.

 • Remember Joseph; he thought his next level might come through being overseer in Potiphar’s house. But Potiphar’s wife’s actions forced him into prison, which moved him closer to Pharaoh’s palace.

Psalm 37:23-24 (AMP):

The steps of a [good and righteous] man are directed and established by the Lord,

And He delights in his way [and blesses his path].

When he falls, he will not be hurled down,

Because the Lord is the One who holds his hand.

2. Handle it by continuing to steward your own heart

Even if that leader failed to steward what God entrusted to them (including you), you still must steward your own spirit, integrity, and attitude well.

 • Guard against bitterness or carrying offense forward — it will cloud your hearing for where God is trying to take you next.

 • Sometimes your next place is delayed not because God hasn’t chosen it, but because He’s still preparing you internally to arrive without residue.

Proverbs 4:23:

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

3. While you wait for the next assignment tied to a place, serve where you are

God doesn’t always immediately reveal the next “place” (church, city, ministry, assignment). Sometimes there is a Selah season, a pause to process and be healed.

 • Continue to worship, continue to study, continue to pour into those God sends your way.

 • Remember — your calling is not confined to a building. It is often first tied to people and purpose before it’s tied to place.

4. Trust that God will make the next place unmistakable.

If He had to remove you abruptly, it’s often because He knew what you could not see. He also knows exactly how to align you with the next assignment.

 • Stay in prayer, keep your ears open, and keep your heart willing.

 • Many times it will be your obedience in the quiet spaces that unlocks the door to the next public assignment.
